Well written and fun. Uses a lot of familiar tropes but with a smooth, often droll writing style. More dense and complex than a lot of space opera. The space routine feels very realistic. Dialogue (and the heroine’s internal monologue) is snappy and sounds real. The plot is complicated and the ending begs for the concluding sequel. Only flaws are a too-obvious villain and a slightly unrealistically competent lead character. But did I care? Nope, read it in two sittings. Strong thumbs up! I’ve been reading science fiction forever, so naturally I was very interested when my favorite historical fiction author published Artifact Space. Growing up reading as Asimov, Heinlien, and others, I have an appreciation for the genre, but I’ve also read a lot of junk.This book is definitely on the EXCELLENT end of the spectrum! The plot and pacing are great, the characters are believable, much as they are with his other books. All in a new universe!I knew Miles Cameron was talented, but I honestly did not expect this level of work. In the same way that he describes medieval combat in a way that puts others to shame, his descriptions of the intricacies of launching ships in space is really unequaled!I have literally never, in hundreds of books, read about a space battle that reminded me of an aircraft carrier in combat. Although John Scalzi does it well, most Sci-Fi battles tend to be similar to the “man o’ war” tactics and terms (a la David Webber channeling C S Forester) or just “all ships launch!” as if it’s that easy.Though a more serious book than Bujold generally writes, the excellent interplay between characters is similar. It comes across as actual people having conversations. Characters are wounded or killed and the survivors react to the pain and loss.The aliens are actually “alien,” not like talking puppies or humans wearing squid bodies. Although the main characters are intellectually OP, they are not omniscient, face self-doubt, and have much to learn. Nbaro rocks!!I will definitely recommend this book and pre-purchase the sequel!
