Off on another tangent that began with The Poet. The Scarecrow is scary, and smart, but aren't all villains? And Rachel, she's an angel-villain, smart and brave, and the one you want on your team. I have read so many books by Michael Connelly he's part of my family, and I plan to continue. His prose is spare, spotty, often lax--he could do with a better copy reader and the book should be docked half a star--but his characters and situations are bewitching, and if culled from real life are well chosen. The treasure here was the description of an internet factory, we always wanted to know how those servers worked and who operated them, how websites are created and maintained, how storage sites are cleared and culled, and how the impartial is anything but. I missed Harry, who is also part of my family but Jack is a trip. I am a big fan of Michael Connelly, and I would read anything he writes. I read The Poet years ago, and was excited to have my friend Judy Crudele recommend this one to me. Don't know how I missed it! Well, that problem is now remedied and it was amazing. I really like how the author moves back and forth between The Farm, where the bad guys reside, and the Times newsroom, where Jack pretty much resides. In some novels, this technique does not work well. Connelly made it work in The Poet, and it works just fine here, too. The tension runs fairly high for much of the book, and reaches new heights during the last quarter. I loved the section where Jack figures out who the main bad guy really is. I could not have put the book down at that point if someone paid me to do it. As always, this author, who respects his readers, ties everything up in the end. No cliffhangers here, ever, no matter that many of his books are part of a series. I also like that Goodreads calls this book part of the "Harry Bosch Universe." It surely is, even though no Bosch cameo this time. Thanks for the recommendation, Judy, and thanks for another amazing read, Mr. Connelly!
